Important Member Update Regarding ORIC Complaint

Dear Members of the Djerriwahh Te Moana Nui A Kiwa Aboriginal Corporation,

We need to address a significant concern that has recently been brought to our attention following a formal complaint made to the Registrar at ORIC by the secretary of Koling Wada Ngal Aboriginal Corporation INC 9557.

This complaint does not merely target an individual; it broadly questions the heritage and legitimacy of many of our members. The initial incident involved an unwarranted attack on one of our esteemed elders, who is proudly of both Maori and Aboriginal descent. Her lineage includes Poolrerrener, an Aboriginal woman from Cape Portland, and her son Edward (known as Black Ned), who settled in New Zealand and started a family. This rich ancestry is an integral part of our diverse community’s fabric.

However, the allegations extend beyond this single case, suggesting a broader attempt to undermine our corporation’s integrity. Specifically, the complaint alleges that we may be in breach of rule 3.1 of our corporation’s rule book regarding membership eligibility. According to our rules, members must:

  • Be at least 15 years old.
  • Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.
  • Have resided within 35 kilometers of the Melton and Moorobool Shire for at least six months.
  • Note that while 1 in 10 of our members can be Non-Indigenous Australians, their inclusion requires a majority approval from our Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander members.

These divisive and unsolicited criticisms have not only targeted one of our respected elders but are also perceived as an attack on the entire community. We find these actions deeply insulting and an attempt to stir trouble within our peaceful community.

We are committed to addressing these issues head-on, ensuring transparency, and upholding the eligibility criteria fairly and justly. We will continue to support the inclusiveness of all members who meet these criteria and confront any challenges to our community’s integrity.

We will provide updates as we investigate and resolve this matter. Thank you for your continued support and unity during these trying times.

Warm regards,

Upcoming Mob Meet at Eumeralla (Yambuk) – Celebrating Our Heritage

We are excited to announce an upcoming gathering of our community this September or October at Eumeralla (Yambuk), where we will mark the Anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People. This event promises to be a meaningful occasion for all ages and a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with our roots and each other.

Event Highlights:

  • Cultural Workshops: Delve into the traditional practices of our ancestors with sessions on local foods and traditional fire-making techniques. Andrew, one of our respected Aboriginal elders, will lead these sessions, offering a hands-on learning experience for our young members.
  • Storytelling Sessions: Join us at the mission to hear our elders share captivating stories of our heritage. These narratives will include mythological (Dreamtime) stories, and insights into our culture’s rich history.
  • Ceremonies and Corroborees: Experience the profound cultural significance of our ceremonies. These events, held frequently and for various reasons including births, deaths, and other significant milestones, help us connect to our ancestral land and traditions.

This gathering is more than just a celebration; it’s a vital part of our ongoing commitment to preserve and pass on the traditions that define us. We invite all members of our mob to join us in this celebration of culture and community. Let’s come together to learn, honor, and enjoy the rich tapestry of our heritage at this special gathering.

Please mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details as we finalise the plans for this important event. We look forward to celebrating with you and strengthening the bonds that unite us.
